Reviewing the Hyundai Veloster and Veloster Turbo

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

In Sunday's Automobiles section, Jonathan Schultz reviews the Veloster and Veloster Turbo, hatchbacks that respectively joined the product lineup of Hyundai in 2011 and 2012.

Particularly with the Turbo, Mr. Schultz applauds Hyundai for offering a remarkable spread of features typically reserved for cars costing significantly more:

The Turbo I drove wore side skirts, LEDs beneath its headlights, deepened sculpturing around the fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels with polished chrome accents and chrome-tipped twin exhaust pipes recessed above a matte-finish diffuser. There was also a matte-gray paint job, a $1,000 option over the car's $22,725 base price.

Not long ago, such finery was the primary province of supercars. Three cheers for economies of scale.

Neither car, however, pairs its extroverted design with remarkable handling or driver involvement - a flaw that, in a crowded fie ld of sub-$25,000 hot hatches and coupes, is not easily forgiven.
