Ford Recalls 155,000 Fiestas to Address Side-Curtain Air Bag Issue

Citing an issue with the side-curtain air bag on the passenger side, Ford informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it would recall nearly 155,000 of its Fiesta subcompacts.

The recall, applicable to Fiestas from the 2011-3 model years, was prompted by an inquiry from Transport Canada, the equivalent agency to N.H.T.S.A. The Canadian agency sought further information about a field test in which the side-curtain air bag on the passenger side did not deploy in a collision on the right side of the vehicle. A sensing system is designed to deactivate the bag when a front passenger is not detected in the seat. A rear-right passenger, however, may not be sufficien tly protected in this situation because the side-curtain bag would not deploy.

In a report posted to its Web site on Tuesday (PDF), N.H.T.S.A. faulted Ford for not properly explaining the passenger air-bag suppression system in the car's owners' manual.

Ford said it would reprogram the Fiesta's software to deploy the side-curtain air bag in side-impact collisions even when the front passenger seat was empty. Notifications of the recall action would be sent to owners this week, Ford said.

N.H.T.S.A., Transport Canada and Ford were not aware of any injuries related to the condition.
