AeroVironment E.V. Charger Goes Portable

AeroVironment, whose hard-wired 240-volt EVSE-RS charger is the official preferred home charger for the Nissan Leaf and other electric vehicles, is expanding its product line with a portable version. The retail price of the EVSE-RS Plug-In is $1,099, or $100 more than the static charger.

Robert Barrosa, director of product development for AeroVironment, said in a recent telephone interview that the company was responding to interest expressed by drivers of E.V.'s who may have been contemplating a move or had second homes.

Accounting for the 25-foot cable, the 1 9-pound charger can be lifted from its wall-mounted bracket, unplugged from a 240-volt outlet and carried to another location. Both installation points, however, would need to be wired with a strategically located 40-amp high-voltage branch circuit, and Mr. Barrosa said that installation could cost $1,000 or more per location for difficult jobs.

“This is a much cheaper alternative to installing two chargers,” wrote Paul Scott, a co-founder of Plug In America, the E.V. advocacy group, and a Nissan Leaf salesman, in an e-mail.

The plug-in charger is similar to the hard-wired version, though Mr. Barrosa said the company added a continuous ground monitor to ensure it would be properly connected and safe to use.

AeroVironment has sold about 10,000 of its household chargers worldwide, with most sales in North America.
