Engine Coolant Leak Prompts 3rd Recall of 2013 Ford Escape

By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN

Ford is recalling about 6,100 of its 2013 Escape crossovers because a coolant leak may cause fires, the automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is the third recall of the redesigned Escape and the second involving a fire risk.

In a report posted on Wednesday to the Web site of the safety agency, the automaker said the latest recall affected vehicles with the turbocharged EcoBoost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine.

Ford told the agency that a cylinder-head cap plug could loosen, allowing coolant to leak from the engine. This would cause the engine to overheat and could lead to a fire. Ford said it learned of the problem after a fire at a dealership in Nashville. The a utomaker said it was unaware of any fires in vehicles belonging to consumers.

Ford recalled almost 8,300 Escapes this summer in the United States because improperly installed carpeting could have interfered with a driver's application of the brake pedal. The third recall applied to about 11,500 vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engine. Ford said the fuel line could split, leading to a fire. In an unusual move, Ford warned those owners to stop driving the vehicles.
